Shaping spaces & creating dreams
20 years of Architectural excellence on the Isle of Wight and beyond.
Originating in Southern Africa, RIBA Chartered Architect Lindsay Mattinson’s career swiftly traversed continents, accumulating a rich tapestry of experiences and insights from architectural practices across Southeast Asia, Southern Africa, Europe, and the UK. She founded an architectural practice committed to pushing the boundaries of modern design inspired by the fusion of the continental cultures and styles she encountered. Mattinson Associates was established in London before relocating the firm to the Isle of Wight, recognising its potential for architectural excellence and a lifestyle of opportunity.
“What drew me to the Isle of Wight, was the lifestyle. We had one young child and another on the way and we wanted somewhere with an outdoors lifestyle. As a family, we love to run, sail and play golf and the Island offered great opportunities for this as well as fantastic properties to reinvent.”
Lindsay’s design is distinctive and personal. This is because she draws on her global inspiration, while making the most of the sites that clients bring to her and really listening when briefed to interpret and read between the lines to exploit all opportunities. Mattinson Associates have a practical understanding of the geology, the weather and the community. Lindsay’s designs can be sensitive to all the above while providing world class design solutions, each unique to the client’s taste and particular to their context.
Over the years, Lindsay has built up a team of collaborators and full-time staff so that as a practice, Mattinson Associates can answer all bespoke residential briefs as well as those that include designing for the public realm. The team have worked hard to create positive relationships with the planning office so that there is a good chance of success within the changing policy environment.
Lindsay went on to say, “It has become clear to me that people want their homes to make the most of their views, be it coastal or rural and to provide flexibility:
• in terms of the season – cosy and intimate in the winter and with breezy indoor-outdoor flow in the summer – and
• in terms of the future– initially accommodating young families while perhaps later catering to retirement hobbies
To cater for this desire for flexibility, Lindsay recruited Abbie Downer, a young up and coming interior designer who, having grown up on the Isle of Wight and worked across the south of England, wanted to return. With a specialist interest in landscaping, Abbie rounded out the architectural services and enabled the development of a holistic architecture, interiors and landscaping approach from the team.
Rejoining the team from London on a permanent basis, Lewis Wood, now a fully qualified architect specialising in technical design, building regulations, construction detailing, and project management, he brings with him not just high-level IT skills, but a keen focus on integrating technological architectural advancements into the practice. With an eye towards the future, Lewis is dedicated to keeping Mattinson Associates at the forefront of the design world by embracing new technologies and leveraging AI to enhance their work.
So, while clients come to Mattinson Associates for Lindsay’s celebrated design, they soon discover that she leads a team of highly creative designers who can magically create both what clients know they want and what they hadn’t realised they need.
As one client remarked, “It is so much better than if we’d done it my way… I’m very glad Lindsay pushed me beyond where I felt comfortable.”
